Transitioning to a new ILS

On October 7, 2024 NPL is switching to a new Integrated Library System (ILS) that will include many exciting updates! See below for more details. We appreciate your patience and support during this transition!

Fresh Start: Fine Amnesty

On October 7 the library will be switching to our new ILS.
All existing fines or fees will be waived on October 8, 2024 – so that everyone gets a fresh start! This one-time fresh start will include any existing late fines or fees for damaged or missing items on all library accounts.
We encourage you to bring back any overdue or billed items. All existing fines will be waived but new fines or fees may occur after October 8, 2024

Most library funding comes from sources other than collecting fines and fees. Having old fines or fees may have discouraged people who cannot pay their fines from using the library, and we want everyone to have a fresh start! In eliminating these charges, NPL hopes to encourage customers to come back to the library and see what’s new! Get a new library card or renew your card without having to worry about old charges!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ILS?

An Integrated Library System (ILS) is the system that we use to manage our records and collections and check in/check out library items.

Isn’t the library Fine Free?

The library does not charge fines for overdue items. However we do charge fines for overdue hotspots and fees for damaged or missing items. If an item is overdue or billed the fines will be waived when the item is returned (in good condition). See the Circulation Policy for information about due dates and cardholder priviledges.

When will fees start accumulating again?

This is a one-time event on October 8, 2024. New fines or fees may occur after October 8, 2024.

Can I still return overdue/billed items?

We encourage you to bring back any overdue or billed items. All existing fines will be waived but new fines or fees may occur after October 8, 2024.

Do I have to bring back the items I’ve checked out to have my charges waived?

No, you do not have bring anything or visit the library for the charges to be waived. However, we encourage customers to bring back your overdue items as soon as possible to prevent additional fines or fees in the future.

Does the fresh start just apply to overdue fees?

No, it applies to all library fines and fees including charges for damaged or missing items.

Will fees I’ve paid in the past be refunded?

No, only existing fines or fees will be waived.

What if I haven’t used my library card in years because of a fine?

All fines will be waived so you start fresh! To apply for a library card or to renew your existing card bring a photo ID and proof of address to the library. If your photo ID has your current address, that’s all you need!

Why would the library waive the charges? Doesn’t that help fund the library?

Most library funding comes from sources other than collecting fines and fees. Fines and fees create unnecessary barriers that discourage people who cannot pay their fines from using the Library.

Additional Updates and Information

The library catalog will be unavailable October 4, 2024 – October 8, 2024. If you need any assistance locating an item or checking the status of your account please see a staff member. A new catalog and customer portal will be available October 8, 2024

The Library will be closed October 7, 2024 for staff training. All due dates will be extended.

Update your Notice Preference during your next visit. Starting October 8, 2024 we will begin offering text notifications, as well as email and phone call. To enroll in text notices staff will need to know your carrier for this option.

All Pin numbers will reset to the last four digits of your library card October 8, 2024. Reset your pin by asking a staff member or log in to your customer portal. Pins can be letters or numbers

Auto renews begin October 8, 2024. All renewable items will renew automatically, as long as they allow renewals and do not have any holds. The length and number of renewals will depend on the item that is checked out. Customers that receive text or email notices will receive a notice when items are auto-renewed. Items can be renewed early from your customer portal, but it is not necessary. Renewing items early, before their auto-renewal date, will limit the length you have items for.
