The ELC Heritage Collection, located at the Nappanee Center is a collection of over 45,000 items related to local Nappanee History. The Heritage Collection is always free and it’s the perfect destination for a day of Summer fun!
Here are a 5 things you can do at the Heritage Collection this Summer!
1. Take a Tour
302 W Market St. Nappanee, IN
The Heritage Collection is open 9 am – 5 pm Monday – Friday and 9 am – 2 pm on Saturday. Entry to the collection is free and self-guided tours are welcome anytime. For a guided tour with a Heritage Collection staff member please contact heritagecollection@nappaneelibrary.org
2. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with Nasa
New Temporary Exhibit at the ELC Heritage Collection on view June 3 – August 16
During Heritage Collection Hours Just before the first man landed on the moon, Charlie Brown and Snoopy soared through space with NASA’s Apollo 10 mission in May 1969. The exhibition To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA examines the history of Apollo 10 and the Peanuts characters’ role in that flight and in the NASA Manned Flight Awareness safety program. Out of this world crafts and activities will be available at the Heritage Collection while supplies last. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA is organized and toured by the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, Santa Rosa, California. Sponsored in part by Friends of the Nappanee Public Library.
3. Record your Nappanee Story
July 29, 10 am – 5 pm
Come into the Heritage Collection and record your Nappanee story! The Heritage Collection will be on hand to help. Collecting, preserving, and sharing oral histories not only shares knowledge but it also enhances our understanding of the past. The real history is found in the lives of ordinary people who lived it.
4. Hit the Pavement: Walking Tour
July 11, 10 – 11 am | Tour begins at the Nappanee Public Library
Put on your walking shoes and join the Heritage Collection as they take you on a tour of Nappanee and talk more about its 150-year history as a town. Tours start and end at the library.
4. Quilt Gardens Along The Heritage Trail
May 30 – September 15
Tracking Our Beginning is in full bloom in the backyard of the Nappanee Center. This year’s quilt garden commemorates the 150th anniversary of the founding of Nappanee. The railroad brought with it the founding of Nappanee and the creation of a vibrant and history-filled city. If you want to learn more about the start of the little railroad town that became Nappanee, come inside the Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection during open hours. If you want to find more quilt gardens in Elkhart County, grab a map and find the other 12 gardens that are sprinkled throughout the county.
